If you are like many of us, you enthusiastically made your New Year's Resolutions and vowed that this will be the year you actually keep them. Then the alarm clock went off on January 2nd, you headed back to work, school, etc. and soon forgot all about those resolutions. Again.
Oh, I know you have great excuses; I've used all of them myself - and a few I bet you never thought of. But they are all just excuses, no matter how creative; in fact, most of us practice "creative avoidance" in all areas of our lives. What is creative avoidance? Well, it is a term coined by the leading self-discipline expert, Rory Vaden. Rory describes creative avoidance as "a phenomena that seems to be slightly different but much more widespread than procrastination," or "busy being busy." While reading a recent post by Rory on how creative avoidance affects our success in business, I realized that the same problem assails our personal lives.
So how do we free ourselves from this creative avoidance and get back on track? By asking ourselves if what we are doing at this very moment will move us closer to reaching our goals or detract from our success. And by being brutally honest as we answer that question. Do we really need to finish one more task before taking that walk?
Visit our Business Directory for a listing of local Fitness Clubs and Gyms. Being active doesn't have to cost money, however. Grants Pass offers beautiful and almost boundless opportunities to be active. Take a walk along the Rogue River, stroll through one of our many well-maintained parks, explore the variety of shops located in the downtown historical district, or just walk through your neighborhood and get to know your neighbors better. For those who are more ambitious, try biking the many local trails.
Now, if you will excuse me, I'm going to enjoy a brisk walk!
